Hi oppo,
As some of you may know, I have a 2006 STS-V that I picked up earlier this year. I’m looking to get rid of it before winter (nearly 500 hp in a RWD configuration isn’t ideal for snow in Colorado).
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with BMW 550is of the F10 generation. I’d be looking for AWD (no manual :( ) and have found a few that seem to be reasonably priced. Are they (the F10s) any good? What about the N63 motor? Does anyone have any experience with these as a DD? What about tuning on the N63? (I know it’s not as supported as the N54/N55 on the aftermarket but it’s a V8...).
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and help on this!

How much for the STS-V? That’s my second-favorite Cadillac

I remember someone made a post on how , because of tuning, the 550 was pretty much rendered useless by the 535. 550 is way more nose heavy and harder to get parts for compared to the N54/55
and sucks way more gas when you arent on it.

For a fellow Oppo: I’d like to get $18k. It’s an 06 with under 20k original miles. One of about 130 from 2006 with the black exterior, sunroof, and red/black interior. It is a salvage title though (first owner wrecked it) and I’ve put about $3k into it in the last couple months getting her working properly.

I had heard that and originally was thinking about doing a 535xi with the stick and just tuning the hell out of it. But I’m thinking I’d rather have a mildly tuned V8 than a high strung I6.
From what I’ve seen the N63 can be tuned to about 480hp with a pretty easy tune. I have a feeling it would be a bit harder to get that out of an I6 while continuing to be reliable.

NP as in nice price? Thanks. Considering it was nearly $80k a decade ago I think they’re pretty serious bargins. Too bad I’m 6'6'’ and don’t fit well at all.

personally, id go for the 6.
easier to find parts.
BMW 6 cylinder. duh.
6 speed
and ease of tuning. and about 2-300lbs less in the nose (yes the weight difference is THAT much). and better fuel econ.
this is one of those weird times where i do actually make a little bit of sense.

Lol, thanks for the thoughts. The more I think about it the more I’m leaning towards you being right... But I love V8s. Like a lot... Ah, decisions I guess.
I also have an SV, nice to see a fellow owner here.

you will probably also find the 6 easier...then again, finding one with the 6 speed might be harder.
There are a LOT of us on Oppo! which gen do you have? I have the first two...need to find someone with a third to take a family photo

Yeah, the xDrive with a 6 speed is tough to find. Literally just searched Autotrader and only found 2 in the country. Both E60s. Might have to stick with the 8 speed...
And mine’s an 03 650S in silver. Went over the handlebars a few months ago and messed up the body work so it’s sitting in my garage ready to be sold. I’m probably going to take the plunge to the new XSR900 sometime next year.

Keep in mind, the N63 sounds kind of really shitty for a V8. The later N55 is also more reliable.

I’ve watched some Youtube videos and would have to agree with you. I have a Ram 1500 with an exhaust cutout for when I want noise lol. This vehicle will be more of a highway cruiser and relaxed car.

F-11 is better than F10

Haha, could be a bit harder to get one of those...

N55. It makes plenty of power low down. I’ve heard the N63 is a nightmare. TFritch on here works on them.

Apparently for cars with the N63 motor, BMW recommends replacing the battery every time you change the oil, because of the regenerative braking and running the fan after shutting the car off to cool down the turbos that are mounted inside the V of the block.
